Anna Dobrova (Ukraine), October 2017, Architecture, Citizenship/Migration, Ecology/Art in Nature, Tradition.
Raizvanguarda welcomes another artist, Anna Dobrova – a Vienna-based, Ukranian artist who will be in our residency for a short while, working on her personal project. Below is an interview with the Dobrova, allowing you to get to know her a little better.
What attracted you to come to RV as a resident?
I was attracted by the fact that the residency is situated on the outskirts of the small village in Portugal – the country I’ve never visited before.
Where are you from? Tell us about your educational background?
I am from Kyiv, Ukraine but currently, I live in Vienna. I have an architectural educational background and went to Vienna 5 years ago to continue my Master studies. In Vienna, I started to work more in the direction of urbanism and art.
In which field of art do you work, what topics are important to you as an artist? What are you passionate about?
I focus more on socially oriented experiments aimed to draw the participant’s long-established stereotypes, passivity or social isolation. Having an architectural background I often work with space and the people who use it.
Tell us a little bit about your project that you’re working on here in RV.
I am here to work on the development of the space for an artistic residency in Kiyv, which are called Soshenko 33. And being here helps me to gain the experience of what artists need in terms of infrastructure and space to feel comfortable and productive in the residency. On the territory I am working with, it allows me to build only temporal seasonal infrastructure, like multifunctional exhibition space, a shelter for living and summer shower. So at the end of this residency, I hope to come up with some project of these structures, which would be built from recycled, ecological materials in frames of the architectural workshop next summer.
What do you like the most about RV?
I like the space very much. This old school building and the view creates the productive and inspiring atmosphere. I also like that this institution goes into the town and collaborates with the locals.
